In 1996 I was on "Politechnika Gdańska" acting as a
navigator for the first time. We didn't have GPS as it is so popular nowadays.
I was forced to navigate in a traditional way. It was fascinating experience to keep the course,
count nautical miles, note it down and estimate the position. When we saw the land, we could check
if the estimation was correct using landmarks. German bays, Copenhagen, lots of ships, routes, lights flashing
in the dark. That was a great challenge! It is not that adventurous when you use GPS.
Passion for sailing and motivation to become a skipper one day kept me going.
My father was in charge.
He allowed me to manouvre when we were approaching and leaving the harbours. I loved every second of it.
Even today it is hard for me to find something more exciting than manouvring the boat.
